Celebrating Diwali with Victoria’s Police Force: A Heartfelt Tribute from the Australian Hindu Community

By the Australian Hindu Community

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude. It’s a celebration that transcends borders, bringing communities together in the spirit of light triumphing over darkness, and good over evil. Last year, the Australian Hindu Community embraced this spirit in a unique and meaningful way—by visiting police stations across the state of Victoria to express our heartfelt appreciation to the men and women who serve and protect us every day.

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय

तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय

मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः

[Om Asato Ma Sadgamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya, Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya, Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.]

A Journey of Gratitude Across Victoria

In the weeks leading up to Diwali, our community members embarked on a statewide initiative to personally thank the Victoria Police for their tireless service. We visited six key police stations: Altona, Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Morwell, Sunshine, and the Police Headquarters in Melbourne. Each visit was a moment of connection, cultural exchange, and mutual respect.

At every stop, we were warmly welcomed by officers and staff who were curious to learn more about Diwali and its significance. We shared stories of the festival’s origins—how Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana is celebrated with lights, sweets, and community gatherings. We explained how Diwali is not just a religious event, but a universal celebration of hope, renewal, and unity.

Sharing the Light of Diwali

To mark the occasion, we presented each station with a small Diwali gift—a token of appreciation symbolizing the light they bring into our lives through their service. These gifts included traditional sweets, decorative diyas (lamps), and personalized thank-you cards from community members.

The officers were touched by the gesture. Many shared stories of their own experiences with multicultural communities and expressed how meaningful it was to be acknowledged during a festival that celebrates light and goodness. It was a reminder that behind the uniforms are individuals who care deeply about the communities they serve.

Building Bridges Through Culture

One of the most powerful aspects of this initiative was the cultural exchange. For many officers, this was their first direct interaction with Diwali celebrations. We spoke about the values that underpin the festival—family, community, resilience, and the triumph of good—and how these values align with the ethos of public service.

In return, officers shared insights into their daily work, the challenges they face, and the pride they take in serving a diverse and vibrant population. These conversations fostered mutual understanding and laid the foundation for stronger relationships between law enforcement and the Hindu community.

Sunshine and Smiles

At Sunshine Police Station, the visit was particularly memorable. Officers joined us in lighting diyas and even tried some of the sweets we brought along. The atmosphere was festive and warm, with laughter echoing through the station halls. It was a beautiful example of how cultural celebration can bring people together, even in the most unexpected places.

A Special Moment at Police Headquarters

Our final stop was the Police Headquarters in Melbourne—a symbolic culmination of our journey. Here, we met with senior officers and shared our appreciation on behalf of the entire Australian Hindu Community. The gesture was acknowledged with gratitude, and we were encouraged to continue fostering community engagement through cultural initiatives.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on last year’s Diwali outreach, we are filled with pride and hope. This initiative was more than a series of visits—it was a celebration of shared values, a bridge between cultures, and a tribute to those who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe.
We hope to continue this tradition in the years to come, expanding our reach and deepening our connections with all branches of public service. Diwali reminds us that even the smallest light can illuminate the darkest path—and through gestures of kindness and gratitude, we can light up the lives of those around us.

Thank You, Victoria Police

To every officer we met—thank you. Your commitment, courage, and compassion do not go unnoticed. May the light of Diwali shine upon you and your families, bringing peace, prosperity, and joy.
